Protect Our Winters UK is a passionate crew of diehards, professional athletes and industry brands mobilising the outdoor sports community to lead the charge towards positive climate action in the UK.

We’re building the movement, lobbying companies and governments and making those small changes in all our lives that make the difference. Our playgrounds, livelihoods and the mountain life we love depend on healthy winters. We’re making sure it stays that way.

Protect Our Winters UK is joining the Winter Alliance to help snow lovers across the UK make the switch to clean energy. The Winter Alliance is a group of individuals and organisations taking practical action to save the mountain life we love. Whether it’s our homes, schools or workplaces, switching to clean energy is the simplest way to join the fight against climate change. It’s quick, easy and could save you money.

Cheap and clean

The costs of clean energy have fallen rapidly in recent years. Moving to a tariff that includes 100% renewable electricity doesn’t mean bigger bills – in fact, most people will save money by switching.

What is clean energy?

‘Clean energy’ means power generated from the elements – sun, wind, water (rivers, tides or wave power) – and biofuels (such as gas released by rotting food and plants). Unlike dirty electricity generated by burning fossil fuels (oil, coal and gas), clean energy has little impact in terms of climate change and air pollution.

You can find out more about the suppliers on the Big Clean Switch panel here, or read about how we choose which suppliers we work with here.

How do clean tariffs work?

Picture the National Grid like a bucket full of water.* When you’re on a renewable tariff, your supplier promises to match the amount you take out of the bucket by putting the same amount of clean water in. The more clean water that goes into the bucket (and the less dirty water), the cleaner the bucket, and therefore the Grid, gets.
* In reality of course, water and electricity shouldn’t mix!

Even better...

Whenever you change supplier through a website like Big Clean Switch, your new energy company pays the website a commission. This doesn’t affect the price of the tariffs we offer (which are the same price as they are on suppliers’ own websites, other than where we’ve negotiated an even better deal). Big Clean Switch uses the income to fund its campaign.

Once we’ve covered the cost of processing your switch, Winter Alliance will receive at least a third of the remaining commission. Some of this will be used to support tree planting programs across europe with Protect Our Winters and their partners Mossy Earth. In cities, mountains, forests or fields, planting trees globally helps to reverse the effects of climate change and stabilise our weather for future generations.
