What is a REGO?

A Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin (REGO) is a certificate that records renewable electricity generation. Ofgem issues one certificate for each megawatt hour (MWh) of eligible renewable electricity generated — equivalent to 1,000 kilowatt hours (kWh).

REGOs can be bought separately from an electricity supply contract. They let you match consumption with the renewable attributes of generation; they do not change the electricity physically delivered to a property.

Reach beyond your own energy contract.

Think of employees using electricity to work from home, or customers using your electrical products. These activities sit beyond your own premises and can form part of your Scope 3 footprint: the indirect emissions across your value chain.

Direct purchasing can support a renewable matching programme for this electricity use without asking everyone to change supplier. We start with the consumption you want to cover and what your programme needs to achieve.

From consumption to certificates.

We help establish the electricity volume and period to cover, then source suitable certificates and explain the costs. Location, generation period and any existing renewable claims all matter when deciding what to buy.

Once you agree the purchase, we arrange certificate retirement on your behalf so those certificates cannot be used again. You receive certificate references and evidence of retirement for your records.

Make the reporting fit the programme.

Renewable matching and carbon accounting are related, but the reporting treatment depends on the standard or programme you follow. Buying REGOs does not automatically mean you can deduct emissions from your Scope 3 inventory.

We help you understand the evidence available and agree the intended treatment with your reporting team or auditor before purchasing. That gives your programme a clear purpose and a documented basis for the claims you make.

A FEW USEFUL ANSWERS

Before your next decision.

“Do employees need to switch energy supplier?”: No. Direct certificate purchasing is separate from their household supply contract. We can discuss matching the electricity associated with homeworking while their existing energy arrangements continue.
“Is a REGO a carbon offset?”: No. A REGO records renewable electricity generation in MWh. It is not a credit for a tonne of carbon removed or avoided.
“What about electricity used outside the UK?”: Tell us where the consumption takes place. Other markets use different energy attribute certificates, and we can discuss the appropriate options for those locations.
